Effect of novel charcoal-containing whitening toothpaste and mouthwash on color change and surface morphology of enamel
Purpose: Theaimofthis in vitro studywas to investigatetheeffectiveness ofa novelcharcoal-containingwhitening toothpasteand a mouthwash on tooth color changeand thealterations ofenamelthatmay beinduced after toothbrushing, corresponding to a 90-day period. Materials andMethods: Forty human canines were used, stained with coffee, and divided into four groups (n = 10)as follows:Group 1 (control) submitted to toothbrushingwith deionized water, Group 2 with a regular toothpaste, Group 3 with a whitening toothpaste(1%charcoal),and Group 4 with thesame whitening toothpastein combinationwith a mouthwash (1% charcoaland 0.5%H2O2 ). After thetreatments, ΔE oftheteethwasevaluated using an ultraviolet/Vis spectrophotometer, whereas thechanges in surface morphology were observed bymeans ofaconfocalmicroscope. Results: The whitening toothpasteincreased significantlyΔE (40.5%)compared to thecontrol group (P 0.001). In addition, thetested whitening toothpastealso increased ΔE (17.7%)compared to theregular toothpaste(P = 0.023). The whitening toothpaste presented smoother surfacesafter toothbrushing, butmore heterogeneous with numerous largecraters, whereas the whiteningmouthwash did not influencesurface morphology changes. Conclusions: Charcoal-containing toothpastes may enhancethe whitening oftheteeth, but they should be used carefully dueto changes thatmay induce on enamel. The patients should consulta dental professionalfor proper use. Acharcoal-containingmouthwash in combinationwithwhitening toothpastes probably cannot offeradditionalwhitening effect.
