Experimental Analysis of the Shape Accuracy in Electrochemical Polishing of Femoral Heads for Hip Endoprosthesis

The number of hip arthroplasties is steadily increasing, as more young people are affected. Typical reasons are complications while the adolescence, bone damage or overweight. In addition to the initial surgery, the number of revision operations increases. The reason for this can be varied, from inflammation of the surrounding tissue to defects of individual components of the hip endoprosthesis. The quality of the femoral heads for hip endoprosthesis is one main factor to reduce such defects. Therefore, the dimensional accuracy and the shape accuracy are essential aspects, which can be adjusted by selecting suitable machining processes. This study presents an experimental analysis of the shape accuracy in electrochemical (EC) polishing of femoral heads for the hip endoprosthesis. The femoral heads were pre-machining by barrel grinding and drag grinding. The surface finishing was performed by EC polishing. The resulting shape accuracy after EC polishing is evaluated considering the pre-machining processes.
