Multi-cancer blood testing combined with PET-CT: road for hope to screen for cancer and guide intervention

In a recent study published in Science, Lennon et al.1investigated the feasibility and safety of multi-cancer peripheralblood testing in combination with positron emissiontomography-computed tomography (PET-CT) imaging todetect cancer in 10,006 women not previously known to havecancer. Their findings reveal that multi-cancer blood testingcoupled with diagnostic PET-CT can be safely incorporatedinto routine clinical care to screen for cancer withoutdiscouraging patients from engaging in other forms ofstandard-of-care (SOC) screening; moreover, it is possible tointervene on the basis of blood testing results, in some casesleading to surgery with intent to cure (Fig. 1).
