During the past few decades, the rapid developmentand wide application of novel molecular techniques haveresulted in unprecedented advances in animal diseasediagnostics. The possibility of detecting and identifyinginfectious agents through the presence of their nucleicacid molecules in clinical samples has been exploited byvarious molecular diagnostic methods, including nucleicacid hybridisation, several amplifi cation methods andnucleotide sequencing. The OIE has actively supportedthe development and use of these molecular techniquesin the fi eld of veterinary medicine, not only inthe OIE Reference Laboratories but also throughthe establishment of OIE Collaborating Centresfocused on biotechnology-based diagnosis.
