The brain is recognized as the most complex organ on earth. The complex neuronal network in the human brain consistsof approximately 86 billion neurons and more than one hundredtrillion connections [1]. Even the mouse brain, which iscommonly used as a model in neuroscience studies, containsmore than 71 million neurons. Despite the great efforts madeby the neuroscientists, our knowledge about the brain is stilllimited and studies on small model animals have only providedpreliminary results [2–4]. To improve the situation, brainsmaticsstudies try to accelerate neuroscience research by providinga standard whole-brain spatial coordinate system and standardizedlabeling tools, imaging the brain, as well as discoveringnew neuronal cell types, neuronal circuits, and brainvascular structures.
