Commentary: Assessment of glaucoma referral letter for quality and accuracy among patients referred to a tertiary eye care centre

In this paper, theauthors haveaddressed an interesting and often neglected areain disease management—a good referralletter.[1] Glaucomaisestimated to affect 12 million Indiansand causes 5.8%ofthe blindness in thecountry.[2] In a population-based survey, the ChennaiGlaucomaStudy revealed that 94.1%of glaucoma was undiagnosed.[3] Unless weimprovethe detection rates significantly, theassociated morbidity andblindness dueto glaucoma would be very difficult to becurtailed. In theabsence ofany one parameter to diagnosethe disease, opportunisticscreening of ophthalmic patientsappears to bethe best way to detectcasesearly. Thereisan urgent need to adoptcomprehensiveeyeexaminations, including intraocular pressure(IOP) measurement, gonioscopy,and optic discevaluation,asaroutine.
