New cyber strategy highlights utility needs

Cybersecurity experts in Australia have said water utilities are being overlooked compared to other essential services, with more support required, after the country's government pushed forward measures aimed at shoring up security within the nation's water utilities. Australian prime minister Scott Morrison recently announced that as part of the federal government's new cybersecurity strategy, operators of the country's critical infrastructure - of which water utilities form a part - will be required by law to pass on information about cyber attacks to the Australian Signals Directorate in real time, and potentially also permit the cyber spy agency to access their networks while under attack (see GWl weekly briefing, 13 August 2020).
