The sailing booster System (SBS) is the latest technological advancement to promise steadier performance on the water. The system employs two outward-facing, L-shaped hydrofoils - one port, one starboard - that increase vessel speed, safety and comfort using an electronic control box (the system's brains), hydraulic cylinders and helm-mounted control panels. 1f "The calculations, prototype, sea trials, tank tests and design took a lot of time and effort," says Manoel Chaves, SBS's inventor and the owner of MCP Yachts, which is building Flying Ahead Time, a 79-foot aluminum performance-cruisingyacht with SBS foils. "The difficult Opart] is always finding a client to invest in the idea." Unlike the foils aboard recent America's Cup yachts, SBS won't lift Flying Ahead Time out of the brine, but instead is designed to reduce her displacement and heeling forces while bolstering boat and apparent-wind speeds. Windward wings can be rotated out of the water to reduce drag, and both wings lie flush on the deck when the boat is docked. At anchor, both wings can be deployed to dampen yaw.
