Theearlyembryoofthemilkweedbug,emOncopeltusfasciatus/em,appearsasasinglecelllayerndash;theembryonicblastodermndash;coveringtheentireegg.Itisatthisblastodermstagethatmorphologicaldomainsarefirstdetermined,longbeforetheappearanceofovertsegmentation.Centraltotheprocessofpatterningtheblastodermintodistinctdomainsareagroupoftranscriptionfactorsknownasgapgenes.InemDrosophilamelanogaster/emthesegenesformanetworkofinteractions,andmaintainsharpexpressionboundariesthroughstrongmutualrepression.Theirrestrictedexpressiondomainsdefinespecificareasalongtheentirebody.WehavestudiedtheexpressiondomainsofthefourtrunkgapgenehomologuesinemO.fasciatus/emandhavedeterminedtheirinteractionsthroughdsRNAgeneknockdownexperiments,followedbyexpressionanalyses.WhiletheblastoderminemO.fasciatus/emincludesonlythefirstsixsegmentsoftheembryo,theexpressiondomainsofthegapgeneswithinthesesegmentsarebroadlysimilartothoseinemDrosophila/emwheretheblastodermincludesall15segments.However,theinteractionsbetweenthegapgenesaresurprisinglydifferentfromthoseinemDrosophila/em,andmutualrepressionbetweenthegenesseemstoplayamuchlesssignificantrole.Thissuggeststhatthewell-studiedinteractionpatterninemDrosophila/emisevolutionarilyderived,andhasevolvedfromalessstronglyinteractingnetwork./p/div
