Developmentally regulated expression of the cell-cell adhesion glycoprotein cell-CAM 12080 in peri-implantation mouse embryos and extraembryonic membranes☆

Peri-implantationmouseembryosandextraembryonicmembraneswereexaminedimmunohistochemicallyfortheexpressionofthecell-celladhesionmolecule(cell-CAM)12080.Cell-CAM12080wasseenalongthelateralbordersofallcellsintheblastocystbutbecameundetectableontrophoblasticgiantcells,somemononucleartrophoblasticcellsandparietalyolksaccellswhenblastocystswereculturedinvitro.Inpostimplantationembryosinvivo,allpartsoftheearlyegg-cylinderreactedwiththeantibodytocell-CAM12080exceptforthecellsoftheparietalendodermandtheprimarytrophoblasticgiantcells.Inthelatestageegg-cylinder,nocell-CAM12080wasseenonthecellsoftheprimitivemesodermorontheprimordialgermcells.Thegermcellsingenitalridgesandfetalgonadsremainedcell-CAM12080-negativethroughoutthefetalstagesofdevelopment.Intheextraembryonicmembranes,thevisceralyolksac,amnion,andthecellsoftheplacentallabyrinthwerecell-CAM12080-positive,whereas,theparietalyolksaccellsandthespongiotrophoblastcellswerenegative.Thesedatashowthatcell-CAM12080isfoundoncellsarrangedintoepitheliallayersintheearlyembryoandextraembryonictissues,butisnotexpressedinthedissociatedcellsdifferentiatingfromtheseepithelia.Thus,theexpressionofcell-CAM12080appearstobedevelopmentallyregulated.
