摘要

To the Editor: Enterobacter saka-zakii, a gram-negative rod-shapedbacterium, is an emerging foodbornepathogen that can cause meningitis, sepsis, or necrotizing enterocolitis innewborns, particularly affecting pre-mature or other immunocompromisedinfants. Although an environmentalreservoir and mode of transmissionfor E. sakazakii has not been clearlyidentified, a growing number ofreports suggest that powderedmilk–based infant formulas can be avehicle for infection. We report theisolation of E. sakazakii from the gutsof larvae of the stable fly, Stomoxyscalcitrans, demonstrating an environ-mental reservoir for E. sakazakii andraising the possibility that environ-mental contamination by insects maybe important in the spread of thisopportunistic organism
