Human parvovirus 4 (PARV4) is a single-stranded DNA virus in the family Parvoviridae ( 1 ). In Western countries, IgG against PARV4 is largely found only in persons with risk factors for parenteral infection and is strongly associated with co-infection with bloodborne viruses ( 2 – 4 ). In Africa, transmission seems to be more complicated; reported PARV4 seroprevalence is 4%–37%, even among persons at low risk and with no evidence of HIV or hepatitis C virus (HCV) co-infection ( 1 , 5 , 6 ).
