TRAINING MODEL FOR PROMOTING TRANSLATION FROM RESEARCH TOCLINICAL SETTINGS: UNIVERSITY OF ALABAMA AT BIRMINGHAM TRAININGFOR CONSTRAINT-INDUCED MOVEMENT THERAPY

A common challenge in strokerehabilitation research is thetranslation of research findingsinto the clinical setting. Multiple factorspresent obstacles to disseminationand adoption, including the complexityof the physical rehabilitationprotocols and the shift in practicerequired by treatment philosophiesthat require innovative approaches.The ConstraintInduced Movement (CI) Therapy Research Group(CITRG) at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) has developedand conducted a 5day training program for clinicians andresearchers that has been delivered semiannually since 2005.The goals of this training program are to accurately disseminatethe CI therapy protocol for upperlimb recovery after stroke thathas been researched at UAB, provide handson instruction, clarifyquestions and correct misunderstandings about componentsof the treatment protocol, and provide advice on implementingit in clinical and research settings. To date, more than 170 cliniciansand researchers, from the United States and abroad, haveparticipated in the training program at UAB. Many have successfullycarried out the protocol back in their institutions. This JRRDguest editorial describes the evolution of the UAB CI Therapy TrainingProgram, details the instructional elements provided in theprogram, describes posttraining experiences of selected programparticipants, and discusses future plans for the training programto further enhance the translation of CI therapy into other clinicaland research settings. The program provides an example of howresearch findings can be translated into a practical clinical programand then disseminated for use by clinicians and researchers.
