Effects of the Application of an Inspiratory Muscular Warm-Up Protocol in the Physical Performance of Handball Athletes

The purpose of this study was evaluate the effects of a specific inspiratory muscle warm-up protocol on the aerobic physical performance in women's competitive handball athletes. Fourteen female athletes performed three warm-up protocols: (a) Conventional warm-up of the modality (CW); (b) Inspiratory warm-up (IW), which consisted of conventional warm-up and 2 sets of 30 breaths at 40% of maximal inspiratory pressure (MIP); and (c) Sham warm-up, which consisted of conventional warm-up and 2 sets of 30 breaths at 15% of MIP (placebo load). The findings indicate that were no significant differences observed across the three warm-up protocols for the test time (P=0.56), distance running (P=0.66), and speed (P=0.22). However, the delta between the IW protocol and the CW protocol and the Sham warm-up protocol showed higher values for time (Δ = 18 sec) and distance traveled (Δ = 35 m) for the IW, which suggests that the IW protocol was more effective for the aerobic physical performance of handball athletes.
