Weinvestigatedeffectsof10-dayirrigationwith0.2M,0.4M,and0.6MNaClontwotobaccovariantscultivatedinTurkey;Samsun(Nicotianatabacum)andHasankeyf(Nicotianarustica).Salttreatmentscausedsignificantreductioninlength,leafing,dry,andfreshweightstogetherwithasignificantdeclineinrelativewatercontents.Pigmentlevelsdecreasedtogetherwithalterationsinchlorophylla/bandchlorophyll/carotenoidratios.Anthocyaninlevelsandprolineamountinrootsincreased.Malondialdehyde(MDA)andconductivityresultsindicated0.6MNaClinduceddamageinrootsandleavesofSamsun.Sinceascorbateperoxidase(APX)activitywashigherincomparisontocatalase(CAT),andincreasedwhereasCATactivitydecreasedinresponsetosalttreatment,APXseemstobemoreimportantintobacco.Leavesandrootsofcv.SamsunseemstobemoreeffectedbysaltthanHasankeyf,whereasrootsofHasankeyfseemstohavebetteradaptiveresponsesagainstsaltstress.
