Intraspecific variation of flavonoid patterns in primitive spring wheats

Thin-layer, 2D chromatographic studies, employing UV light, were made of 83 primitive spring-wheat varieties (Triticum aestivum L. em. Thell.) originating from Asia, Africa and Europe. Fourteen flavonoid marker spots were discerned of which four were present in all varieties; the other 10 spots occurred variously throughout the material. Disregarding four rare spots, 11 spot-pattern types were discriminated. Varieties indigenous to Syria, Persia and Iraq displayed a spot-pattern frequency for types Nos. II-XI that was three times more common than varieties exhibiting pattern-type I. In the other areas the tendency was that the varieties had type-pattern No. I more often than Nos. II-XI, with the possible exception of Turkey. The 83 varieties have exhibited a surprisingly large intervarietal variation, which seems to indicate a multicentric origin of our material.
