Efforts to subject one’s own pet hypotheses to severe tests, to attempt to falsify them, are always warranted. The likelihood that one will impose unrealistically high standards is quite low. The same cannot be said for the standards that scientists set for the work of their opponents…. As unseemly as factionalism in science may be, it does serve a positive function.
