Background:ObesityisincreasinginIranianschoolagedandthereislackofinformationontheenergyandmacronutrientintakeofchildren.TheobjectiveofthisresearchwastostudytheenergyandmacronutrientintakeinIranianschoolchildren.MaterialsandMethods:Thisisacross-sectionaldescriptivestudyconductedonIranianschoolagedboysandgirlsaged14-19yearsoldfromallthepopulatedregionsofShiraz,Fars.Informationwasobtainedthroughaquestionnairefortheentiresampleonthefrequencyoffooditems.WeusedaNutritionistIVtoanalyzedietaryintakes.AlldataenteredinSPSSversion16forstatisticalanalysis.Results:Theageofthestudentsrangedfrom14to19years.Meanagesofthegirlsandboyswere16.0?±0.97and16.0?±0.93,respectively.Therewerenosignificantdifferenceregardinganymacroandmicronutrientamongthesetwogroups(boysandgirls)(P-value0.05).Calorieintakewasnotdifferentamongthesetwogroups.Folate,iron,calciumandfiberintakewerelowerthantheRecommendedDietaryAllowance.Overall,themeanenergyintakeofstudentsrangedbetween312and3a€?896oftheRecommendedDietaryAllowancefordifferentagegroupsandalsotwogenders.ThepercentageofmeanenergyintakewhencomparedtotheRecommendedDietaryAllowancedecreasedwithincreasingageofboysandgirls.Conclusion:Lowintakeoffruitsandvegetablesanddietaryfiber,highsugarintakeandhighenergy%ofsaturatedfatanddietarycholesterolbyIranianchildrenislikelytoincreasetheirriskofobesityandcardiovasculardiseaseslaterinlife.So,nutritionaleducationprogramsinschoolsshouldemphasizetheimportanceofhealthybalanceddietsandtherisksofconsumingemptycalories.
