摘要

Objective: To investigate whether there is anassociation between the 45bp insertion/deletionpolymorphism in the uncoupling protein 2 (UCP2)gene, and obesity and/or obesity-related phenotypesDesign: A prospective analytical case control surveySetting: Afyon Kocatepe University Medical Facultyand Afyonkarahisar State Hospital, TurkeySubjects: A total of 138 obese cases and 75 non-obesecontrols from Western population of Turkey wereincluded in this study.Interventions: Anthropometric data were obtained bymeasurements of weight, height and circumferencesof waist; and hip and body mass index and waisthipratio (WHR) were calculated. DNA was isolatedfrom peripheral blood and statistical analysis wasconducted using the SPSS programme (version17.0). The genotypes for the UCP 45 bp ins/delpolymorphism were identified by polymerase chainreaction.Main outcome measures: The relationship betweenthe 45bp insertion/deletion polymorphism in the UCP2gene and obesity and/or obesity related phenotypesResults: No significant difference was detectedbetween obese cases and non-obese controls regardinggenotype distribution and allele frequencies. However, the WHRs from phenotypes among obesecases having Del/Del and Ins/Del genotypes werefound to be respectively higher (0.87 +/- 0.09 and 0.90+/- 0.10) than in the ones having Ins/Ins genotypes(0.81 +/- 0.13) (p 0.05).Conclusions: This is the first study supporting therole of the 45 bp insertion/deletion polymorphism inobesity in Turkey. Further studies with larger samplesizes may confirm these findings.
