Does Laparoscopic Tubal Sterilization cause Premature Menopause?

Objective: Laparoscopic tubal sterilization is a commonlypreferred contraceptive method in women. This surgicalintervention can be associated with certain complications inthe short term and it also has the risk of failure in the longterm. On the other hand, relationship between laparoscopictubal sterilization and premature menopause in the longterm has not been elucidated. The present study addressesthis subject.Design: Retrospective cohort studySetting: The local hospital of Ankara, TurkeySubjects: The study group included 76 patients with thelaparoscopic coagulation (Group 1) and 76 healthy women(Group 2).Intervention: The study aimed to determine age atmenopause between patients who underwent tubalsterilization using the laparoscopic coagulation method andthe control group.Main outcome measure: Age at menopauseResults: There was no statistically significant differencebetween the groups with regard to age of menopause (47.86± 1.72 vs. 48.19 ± 1.61; p = 0.271).Conclusions: Tubal sterilization using the laparoscopiccoagulation method does not result in premature menopause.However, further studies should focus on the effects ofsalpingectomy, which has proved to be protective againstovarian cancer.
