Therearenumerouspreandpostslaughtertechniquesthatcouldinfluencemeattenderness.IncreasedlevelsofintracellularcalciumbyinclusionofvitaminD3toincreaseabsorptionofcalciumfromtheboneandintestineareamongthepreslaughterinterventionsforimprovingmeattenderness.Atpresent,dietarysupplementationofdifferentlevelofvitaminD3onspentchickenassociatedwithcalciumconcentrationandmeattenderizationareyettobestudied.AnexperimentwasthereforeconductedtodeterminetheeffectofvitaminD3supplementationonCasup2;+concentration(inmuscleandblood)andmeattendernessofspentchicken.Onehundred80weeksoldspentlayerwereusedasexperimentalbirds.Thebirdswerefedwithcommerciallayerfeedforoneweekduringadaptationperiod.Priortocommencementoftheexperimentaldiets,bloodforthedeterminationofserumcalciumanalysiswaswithdrawn.Differentsupplementationlevels(0,25x103,50x103,and1x105I.U.)ofvitaminD3weremixedwithcommercialfinisherlayerdiets.Afteroneweekoffeedingwithexperimentaldiets,thebirdswereslaughteredandbloodsamplesforserumCasup2;+analysiswerecollected.ThebreastmusclesweredissectedoutandassignedformuscleCasup2;+determinationandshearforceanalysis.Supplementationwith0,25x103,50x103,1x105IUofvitaminD3decreased(p0.05)serumCasup2;+concentration.SupplementationwithvitaminD3doesnotgiveanysignificanceincreasedinmusclecalcium.Inaddition,shearforcevaluesofthebreastmusclesincreasedwithvitaminD3supplementation.TheseresultsindicatedthatvitaminD3supplementationfor7daysdoesnotelevateserumCasup2;+,muscleCasup2;+concentrations,andmeattendernessofspentchickens.
