TheevaluationofthechemicalcompositionofscrapdatesandvarietiescommonAlgerianhasbeenverylittlestudied.Thepresentstudyaimstoidentifyacommonsharedates,representativeofphoenicicoleAlgerianheritage,andsecondlytoevaluatethenutritionalqualitieslinkedprimarilytotheirsugarcontentthuspavingthewayforarecoveryinanimalfeedandanimprovementinthemarketvalueofthesevarietiesthreatenedbygeneticerosion.Todothis,twentycultivars(varietiesandscraptogether),sampledatthreesitesinthesouth-eastofAlgeriawerechosenfollowingtheinvestigationsthathavebeencarriedoutatthirty-onefarmsacrossthesesites.Thesignificantdifferencesbetweenvarietiesof:solids,totalnitrogen,totalsugarsandfibers(P0001)showgreatvarietaldiversity.95%ofvarietiespresentlevelsoftotalsugarsgreaterthan60%,mostofwhicharewater-solublesugars,fermentedeasilybytherumenmicrobialpopulationandtherebygeneratinganenergybenefittotheanimal.ApartfromthegroupconsistingofthevarietyLitimawhointroducedthehumidityhigher,allothervarietieswouldlendthemselveseasilytoconservationbydryingintheopenair.Finallyfibres,whichretainmicrobialactivityattherightlevel,calculatedfromthepercentageof:NDF,ADFandADL,reflectingthedigestibilityofafeed,arepresentinrelativelysmallquantities(max17%)wheretheimportanceofassociatingasourceforagesinthediet.Infact,whatevertheircontent,themerepresenceofthesefibersprovesthatthesedatesarefoodsligno-cellulosicthatcanbevaluedbyruminants.FinallySich,theDegletNoorvariety,namedintheoasis,hasrecordedthehighestrateofprotein(4.07%).Thedatesthatareverypoorinthiscomponentshouldbecorrectedbyanitrogensupply.Thecharacteristicsofthevarietiesstudiedcanbeusefulforanimalconsumption,especiallyinareaswheretheseresourcesareavailable.
