Occurrence and factors associated with udder infections in small holder lactating dairy goats in Arumeru district, Tanzania

nbsp;Astudywasconductedtodeterminetheprevalenceofsubclinicalmastitis,identifyandquantifyudderandteatlesion/deformitiesinsmallholderdairygoatfarmsinArumerudistrict,TanzaniaduringtheperiodofOctober-December2007.Atotalof99smallholderfarmscomprising149pureandcrossbredlactatingdoeswereincluded.nbsp;Ofthe298udderhalvesand297teatsinvestigated,proportionfoundtohavephysicallesionordefectswere14.8%forteatsand13.4%forudderhalves,respectively.Thecommonobservedteatlesionswereblackspot,vesiclesandpresenceofmultipleorextrateatswhereaspresenceofhardorfirmudderhalves,unsymmetricalattachmentwasmoreevidentfortheindividualhalvesscreened.Theprevalenceofsub-clinicalmastitisbasedonCaliforniaMastitisTest(CMT)atflock,doeandudderhalflevelwas51.5%(95%Confidenceinterval[CI],41.2-61.6),38.92%(95%CI,31.05-47.2),and28.9%(95%CI,23.8-34.47),respectively.Nonehadsignssuggestiveofclinicalmastitisatatimeofvisitalthough12%and7%ofthescreeneddoesandsurveyedfarmshadevidenceofclinicalmastitis2to3yearspriortothecurrentstudy.nbsp;Theresultsofmultivariatelogisticregressionanalysisidentifiedadministrativelocationofgoatsandhousingsystemasthemajorriskfactors.Prevalenceofmastitisvariedsignificantlybetweentheadministrativestudydivisions.ItwashigherinPoli(74.6%)andKingori(22%)andlowerinMoshono(3.4%)division.Theresultsalsoindicatedthattherewasastatisticallysignificantdecreaseinprevalencetosubclinicalmastitisinlactatinggoatskeptonraisedslattedthanearthfloorhouses(OR=0.68,P=0.05forraisedslattedfloorhouses).nbsp;Theresultsofthisstudyshowedthatsubclinicalmastitisisanendemicandwidelydistributedproductionconditionandmaycontributedtosub-optimalmilkproductionandcullingofgoatsinArumerudistrict.nbsp;
