Illustratedbytheauthor'spersonalcommunicationexperienceandthepotentialthatgoodcommunicationconnectionshave,nbsp;inenablingdevelopment,thepaperdescribesaninitiativeinBangladeshthatwithinafewyearswillbringcellularphonesintothe35,000villagescoveredbytheGrameenBank.Thecompany-GrameenPhone-inapilotprograminvolving150villageshasconfirmedthatthevillagephoneconceptiseconomicallyviable.Itisconcludedthatmicrocreditshouldnotbeviewedasanarrowprogramtohelpthepoor,butasatooltoreleasetheentrepreneurialenergyofthepoor,whichcanmeetthetwoimportantobjectivesofupliftingtheeconomyandbenefitingthepoor.
