Use of local carbohydrate sources and a protein supplement by pig farmers in a Colombian village in the Andean Hills

On-farmtrialswerecarriedoutintwodatacollectionperiodstoevaluatetheperformanceofgrowing-fatteningpigsfedonlocalsourcesofcarbohydratessupplementedwith200g/dayofproteinfromsoyabeangrainormeal,inbothcasesenrichedwithvitaminsandminerals.Inthefirstperiod,fourfarmerswithatotalof33pigsusingthetraditionalsystembasedonconcentratesprovidedbaselinedata.Inaddition,theuseofsugarcanejuice(SCJ)andsoyabeancookedgrainsonasinglefarmincluding29animalswasevaluated.Thegrowthratewascalculatedbylinearregressionfromdataoftheliveweightoftheanimals,whichwasrecordedevery14days,andusedasaresponsevariableinamodelthatincludedtheeffectofthefarmasavariationfactor.Thiseffectwasfoundtobesignificant(P0.05).Themeansfordailygain(g/day)onthefarmsusingthetraditionalsystembasedoncommercialconcentratesrangedfrom527upto623g/day,whileonthefarmwithSCJdailygainwas427g/day.Inthesecondperiodarevolvingresearchfundwasestablishedandtheexperimentaldietsevaluatedwerebasedonsourcesofcarbohydratesavailableoneachfarmandtheuseof500gofaproteinsupplement(40%protein)fromsoyabeanmeal.Inthisperiod,growthrateoftheanimalswascalculatedasdescribedaboveandtheeffectoffarmanddietwereincludedasvariationfactorsinthevarianceanalysis.Bothfactorswerefoundtobesignificant(P0.05)fordailygain.Theadjustedmeansfordailygainonthedifferentdietswere:commercialconcentrate(baselinedata,20animalsin4farms)567g/day;SCJ(24animalsin2farms)518g/day;plantainandbananas(8animalsinasinglefarm)367g/day,andforfarmandkitchenwastesandresidues(24animalsin4farms)512g/day.Itwasconcludedthatproteinisthemainlimitingfactoranditwasrecommendedthatworkinthisareabegiventhehighestpriority.Thefactthatthefarmerswerewillingtorepay8.5%abovethevalueoftheinputsborrowedindicatestheirwillingnesstoparticipateinfurtherresearch,andtheconstructiverolethatarevolvingresearchfundcanplaytofacilitateon-farmlivestockresearch.
