nbsp;InUganda,thepriceofmaizeasthemainsourceofenergyinpoultryfeedisprohibitiveduetoitsscarcityandcompetitiveness.Therefore,researchisrequiredtostudythenutritionalvalueofalternativeenergyfeedstuffssuchasJavaplum(Syzygiumcumini)beans(JPB).ChemicalanalysisandonefeedingtrialwereconductedtoassessthenutritionalvalueofboiledJavaplumbeans(BJPB)inbroilerchickdiets.Inthefeedingtrial,boiledJavaplumbeanmeal(BJPBM)substitutedmaizemeal(MM)by0,25,50,75and100%inbroilerstarterdiets.TheBJPBhaddrymatter(DM)contentof85.0±2.03%,nitrogenfreeextract(NFE)of72.9±1.95%,calculatedmetabolisableenergy(ME)of13.3±0.25MJ/kg,crudeprotein(CP)of4.23±0.48%,etherextract(EE)of1.05±0.17%,crudefibre(CF)of5.06±0.72%,ashof1.75±0.11%,phosphorus(P)of0.11±0.02%andcalcium(Ca)of0.05±0.01%.nbsp;Inthefeedingtrial,dietswithBJPBMsignificantly(P0.05)depressedchickgrowth.Feedintakewassignificantly(P0.05)reducedabove25%replacementratewhereasfeedefficiencydidnotchangemuch.Therewasnomortalityinthecontroltreatmentandat25%boiledJavaplumbean-maizereplacementrate.ThestudyshowedthatBJPBMcannotreplaceMMinbroilerstarterdietswithoutdeleteriouseffectsonthebirds.TheboilingtreatmentdidnotimprovethenutritionalvalueofJPB.
