Alaboratoryexperimentonensilingsweetpotato(SP)included5differentratiosofsweetpotatoroots(SPR)andvines(SPV):70,60,50,40and30%ofSPRwith30,40,50,60and70%ofSPVonadrymatterbasis,respectively,givingtreatmentsSP7:3,SP6:4,SP5:5,SP4:6andSP3:7.SamplesofSPsilagewereanalysedat0,7,14,21,28,42,70and84daysafterensilingtodeterminechemicalcompositionandfermentationandphysicalcharacteristics.WhenSPRlevelsdecreasedfromtreatmentSP7:3totreatmentSP3:7thecolourchangedfromyellowtoadeepergreenbecauseofthedarkgreencolourofSPV.However,thecolourdidnotchangefrom14to84daysofensiling.Thesilageonalltreatmentshadagoodsmellatalltimesupto84days.Withincreasingensilingtime,drymattercontentincreasedandcrudeproteindecreasedinalltreatments,butthechangeswerenotsignificant.OtherchemicalcomponentssuchasNDF,calcium,andphosphorusdidnotchangeduringthe84daysofensilinginalltreatments.ThepHvalueinalltreatmentsdecreasedrapidlyinthefirstweek(fromaround6.4toaround3.8)nbsp;andcontinuedtodecreaseuptoday14(toaround3.6),thenremainedlowuntil84days.Aceticacidandlacticacidincreasedquicklyinthefirst2weeks(P0.01)andthenremainedconstantto84days.nbsp;AstheSPRleveloftheSPsilageincreased,pHvaluesdecreased(duringthe84daysofensiling)andlacticacidincreasedduringthe2firstweeksofensiling.TheNH3-Ncontentinalltreatmentsfluctuatedataround2-3%oftotalnitrogenandwasnotaffectedbyensilingdurationorratioofroottovine.Allofthetreatmentsresultedingoodqualityproducts.
