ThedemandforenergyandanimalproteinamongruralcommunitiesinSouthAfricaisincreasingonadailybasis.nbsp;Theinflationratehasresultedinmanyruralpeoplehavingnodisposableincometoaffordabalanceddiet.nbsp;Attemptsbygovernmenttosupplythesepeoplewithfoodhaveprovedcostly.nbsp;However,themajorityofhouseholdsintheseruralcommunitieskeepNgunigoatsmainlyformeatproduction.TheaimofthestudywastoassesswhetherindigenousNguniandBoerGoatsproducehighqualitymilkthatcanbeusedasnutritionalsupplementinruralcommunitiesnamelytwogroupsofBoerGoats,oneowhichwasintensivelyfeedandtheotherextensivelyfeed.TwogroupsofNgunigoatsweresimilarlytreated.nbsp;MilksamplesfromallfourgroupswereanalysedusingMilko-scan103:F.P.L.,apparatusmodel102,F.P.nbsp;Theresultsobtainedindicatedthattheintensivelymanagedgoatdoeshadamaximummilkfatyieldof8.79+2.58%and8.86+3.68%inweeks1and8forBoerandNgunidoesrespectively.TheBoergoatsintheintensivefeedingsystemyieldedamaximumof6.48+2.11%lactoseinweek9,whilstamaximumlactosecontentof6.95+2.47%wasrecordedduringweek10forBoergoatsintheextensivefeedingsystemand8.86+3.68%and7.48+4.52%wererecordedforNgunigoats(intensiveandextensive,respectively)duringthesameweek(week8and6).Boergoatsdoesfedintensivelyyieldedmaximumandminimummeanmilkproteincontents(%)inweeks4and6respectively,whilstthesamebreedunderextensivefeeding,yieldedmaximumandminimumproteincontentsduringweeks5and9,respectively.TheintensivelyfedBoerandNgunigoatsshowedapeakmeanmilkSNFcontentinweeks2and8respectively,whilsttheextensivelyfedanimalsreachedtheirmaximumvaluesduringweeks10and6(BoerandNgunigoatsdoesrespectively).Itcanbeinferredfromtheresultsobtainedthatmilkfromthesetwotypesofgoatsisofhighnutritionalvalues.nbsp;
