A study of topics in English textbooks for mutual understanding

摘要

The objective of this study is to examine the importance of global education and ways to incorporate it into EFL, focusing on the topics of junior high-school English textbooks approved in Korea and Japan. In the framework of global education suggested by Pike and Selby in 1998, it is possible to infuse global educational knowledge, skills, and attitudes, into all the traditional subjects of the curriculum. Arao and Kimura (2011) study the textbooks and conclude that junior-high school learners of English in the two countries are expected to develop global perspectives and a cosmopolitan sense by raising a balanced awareness of ‘global culture’ and ‘native culture’. The present study suggests indispensable topics for the ideas of material development in global education.
