Eldercare in long-term care homes requires more than ever a partnership between family and staff. Predominantly affected by cognitive impairment, this vulnerable clientele is represented and protected by its family. However, the development of a partnership relationship is hindered by many obstacles. This qualitative study aims at investigating, by sharing perspectives of families and carers, factors affecting the development of an effective partnership between the family of elderly people residing in a long-term care home and the nursing staff. Eleven family members and 5 nursing staff workers participated in semi-structured individual and family interviews. The results showed that attitudes of openness, availability and listening, as well as effective communication facilitate the relationship. However, lack of recognition about the expertise of the family and their emotions hinders the relationship.
