Built on his belief that mathematics can be a keystoneto student learning, the Keystone program for teachingmathematics has helped students at different college levels.For example, in a multiyear study involving hundreds ofcommunity college students, the method led to an increasein student success in Elements of Algebra to 59%, as comparedto 18% in the control group. Interestingly, withoutteaching any reading, it also led to a 12.3 percentile-pointincrease in reading comprehension scores of students,which could be attributed to their improved concentrationskills. The control group showed no increase in the readingscores. The cumulative data also confirmed that theretention rate for the project classes was 74% versus 67%in traditional classes.
