Since the piezoelectric effect was first discoveredin 1880 by the French scientists Pierre and Paul-JacquesCurie, the use of piezoelectric materials has really in-creased in modern engineering applications, especially inthe field of smart structures, where they are used as actua-tors and/or sensors. Although the magnitudes displace-ments and/or voltages are small, piezoelectric materialshave been adapted to an impressive range of applications.An interesting application in laser technology devices iscontrolling the intensity of laser beam power up to zero,realized by various laser beam shutters for safety and beamcontrol applications.
