AFLATOXIN Mi CONCENTRATION IN MILK AND MILK PRODUCTS FROM AYDIN PROVINCE, TURKEY

This study’s goal was to document levels of af- latoxin M1 (AFM1) in raw milk, UHT milk, cheese, and yoghurt produced and sold at local markets in Aydin Province, Turkey. A total of 115 samples were analyzed: 30 raw milk, 24 UHT milk, 41 cheese, and 20 yoghurt samples. AFM1 content was determined by extracting AFM1 from the samples, retaining aflatoxin with immunoaffinity column, eluting with methanol and acetonitrile into vials, and injecting samples into an RP-HPLC to quantify the amount by fluorescence detector. The results shown that AFM1 was present. The numbers of contaminated samples of raw milk, UHT milk, cheese, and yogurt samples were 13 (43.3%), 14 (58.3%), 21 (51.2%), and 2 (10%), respectively. Five (16.6%) raw milk and two (8.3%) UHT milk samples had concentrations that exceeded the limits of the Turkish Food Codex (TFC). All cheese and yoghurt samples were within TFC limits. AFM1 content in raw and UHT milk samples were significantly different from the European Commission and TFC limits of 50 ng/kg (p<0.01). For these samples, there were no statistically significant differences.
