65 year old gentleman underwentscreening colonoscopy. A 5 mm polyphas been identified in the distal ascendingcolon and has been excised.Microscopically, spindle-shaped cellsalong with a collection of ganglion cellsare identified in the sections taken fromthe polyp.Ganglioneuromas are mature, benigntumors composed of a proliferation ofnerve fibers, Schwann cells and ganglioncells. They most commonly arisein the posterior mediastinum and theretroperitoneum. Ganglioneuromas ofthe intestinal tract are less common andcan occur at any level, from the stomachto the anus, and even described in thegallbladder. They are most common inthe colon and rectum.
