Originally fromGermany, Dr ErwinAckerknecht studied in Germany andFrance, held professorships in the history of medicine at theUniversity of Wisconsin and the University of Zurich, andthroughout his career worked (at leastintermittently) as apracticing clinician.A Short History of Medicine was originallypublished in 1955 and subsequently updatedby the author in 1982. This “revised and expanded” edition bookends Dr Ackerknecht’sown work with a foreword and a concludingessay by Charles Rosenberg (emeritus professor of the history of science at Harvard, anda former student of Dr Ackerknecht) and abibliographic essay by Lisa Haushofer, alsoof Harvard. Thus, in one text, we have bothAckerknecht’s survey of the history of medicine, and a vantage point from which to assesshis Short History as a historical document inits own right.
