The purpose of the glossary is to put together some useful terms relating to various aspects of forestry. Given the increasing focus on the major environmental degradation occurring in the developing countries and, in particular, in arid and semiarid areas, the World Bank is paying increasing attention to encouraging better management of natural resources. Forestry management in arid and semiarid areas is an expanding field, involving new concepts not readily found in English- and French-language academically oriented glossaries.
