The herbal tea and Sene (Senna alexandrina Miller syn. Cassia angustifolia Vahl) are widely consumedby the Brazilian population for its laxative properties, attributed to compounds antraquin?nicos, and itslow cost compared to other species with the same activity. However, many herbal products have beenmarketed outside the standards set by the Pharmacopeia and specific laws, making them unsuitable forconsumption. With the aim of evaluating the quality of samples sene sold in establishments of Feira deSantana, Bahia, we analyzed three samples of sene through microscopic tests, tests chemicalidentification and purity. The technical and scientific information labels were also verified inaccordance with the requirements and obligations of Brazilian law, in which it was found that only oneproduct had the necessary information to marketing. Based on phytochemical and pharmacobotanicaltests, all samples were deemed authentic. However, tests of purity, a product made outside the standardset by the Brazilian Pharmacopeia and in disagreement with the information contained in its label.These results indicate that the products marketed lack information on their packaging and qualityrequired, necessitating the supervision of the competent organs of manufacturers and accuracy.
