Several discussions took place about proposals for changes in the Brazilian educational system after the promulgation of the last Law of Guidelines and Bases of National Education (LDBEN), which establishes to prepare the student for the citizenship as main objective of school education. However, with respect to the Chemistry Teaching, few changes happened in recent years despite the publication of National Curriculum Guidelines for Chemistry Courses (DCNCQ) in 2001. Thereby, the purpose of this article is to present some reflections based on DCNCQ about the perceptions that high school graduates have about the Chemistry Teaching. For data collection, we have applied a questionnaire to thirty students graduated from high schools located in Crateús-CE, Brazil. Based on the answers provided by the students, we found that the inadequate training of chemistry teachers is the main factor responsible for the precariousness of discipline learning, since it completely is out of tune with guidelines of training established by DCNCQ. This article also discusses the outdated methodological practices, which insist on perpetuating in the chemistry classes, the almost total lack of experimental classes, the inappropriate way of working the textbook and the teacher not assume the role of inspiring and facilitating agent of the learning of chemistry.
