If, however, the answer to the last question is “yes”, or even if it is “no” but it is accepted that the ideal is unachievable, then the role of secondary prevention is crucial. Secondary prevention in this context, i.e. the identification, investigation, and control of the outbreaks resulting from contaminated food, is the responsibility of local, national, and international pub- lic health and laboratory professionals.
