Implementation Of Multivariable Controllers On Coupled Tank Process

This paper addresses the level and temperature control of a coupled tank process. Most of the advanced modern processes arecomplicated and Multi Input Multi Output (MIMO) in natural which are more difficult to control than Single Input Single Output(SISO) due to the existence interactions between loops. Although considerable effort has been dedicated to this problem and manydesign techniques have been proposed over the years, the design and implementation of a MIMO control system still pose a bigchallenge to control researchers and practical engineers. Initially, a mathematical model for 4x4 laboratory scale coupled tanksystem has been developed. A Centralized PI (CPI) and Decentralized PI (DPI) controllers are designed and the performances arecompared. Experimental results demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed CPI in terms of tracking the set point, reject thedisturbances and maintain the steady state value effectively with less error indices.
