Comparative analysis of total phenolic contents of some plant species of genus Artemisia , Mentha and Datura

摘要

Phenolic contents are very important class of organic compounds with the ability to work as antioxidants. Based on this property, the medicinal plants containing high concentration of phenols can be used to treat various ailments associated to free radical s. During current investigation the phenolic contents of methanolic, ethyl acetate, chloroform and n - hexane extracts of Artemisia gmelinii, A. brevifolia, Menta royleana, M. longifolia, Datura stromonium and D. alba of Gilgit - Baltistan (G - B) origin were co mparatively evaluated for phenolic contents (mg Gallic acid equivalents/Kg extract) . The results showed that the non - polar fractions of D. stromonium and D. alba contains highest concentration of phenolic as compared to A. gmelinii, A. brevifolia , w hereas, Mentha species were found to contain least total phenolic. The polar fractions of Artemisia species were also found as a rich source of phenolic. The results indicates that non - polar fractions of Datura species and polar fractions of Artemisia can be intr oduce as a rich source of natural phenolic/antioxidants for extraction and purification of individual ingredients.
