Building a “Seamless Environment” for Assessment of Information Literacy: Libraries, Student Affairs, and Learning Outside the Classroom

Assessmenthasbeenatopicofinterestinhighereducationfordecades,withitsrecentgrowthrootedinanumberofscholarlytraditions,aswellasthebroaderinterestin“accountability”thathasbeencharacteristicofAmericaneducationsincethe1980s.Manypreviousstudieshavedemonstratedthattheliteratureofassessmentinhighereducationisarichresourceforthosewishingtoidentifyeffectiveapproachestotheassessmentofinformationliteracy.Thispieceinvitesreaderstopayattentiontothelessonstaughtbyfacultydevelopmentexpertsaswellasbyscholarsofthescienceofteachingandlearning,butalsotorememberthatstudentlearningtakesplacebothinsidetheclassroomandoutsidetheclassroom.
