Advancing the Promotion of Information Literacy Through Peer-led Learning

TwonewcoursesattheUniversityofWindsorareopeningthedoortothinkingaboutinformationliteracyandcurricularintegrationinverydifferentways.Thecourses,WaysofKnowingandMentorshipamp;Learning,wereoriginallydesignedtohelpwithretentionandtransitionissues.Theywerealsofoundedontheconceptofpeer-ledlearningattheuniversitylevel.Inthismodelstudentsareabletoconnectwiththeirpeersinanorganicwaythatisnotalwayspossiblewithfacultyandlibrarians.Itdidnottakelongtoseethepotentialinusingpeermentorsaspotentialconduitsinthetransferofinformationliteracyskills.Thisarticletellsthestorybehindthedevelopmentoftwocoursesandthemistakesthathadtobemadebeforetheconnectionbetweenmentorsandinformationliteracycouldbeseen.Italsoshowsthatbyinvolvingfacultyandstudentsinthedesignanddeliveryofaninformationliteracy-integratedcurriculumthelibrarycanaccomplishfarmorethananyone-shot,tool-basedsession.
