An Outbreak of Yersinia enterocolitica in a Captive Colony of African Green Monkeys (Chlorocebus aethiops sabaeus) in the Caribbean

Yersiniaenterocoliticaisazoonoticgram-negativepathogenthatcausesmesentericlymphadenitis,terminalileitis,acutegastroenteritis,andsepticemiaindomesticanimalsandprimates.In2012,46captiveAfricangreenmonkeys(Chlorocebusaethiopssabaeus)diedduringanoutbreakofacutelyfatalentericdiseaseoveraperiodof1moontheislandofStKitts.Theaffectedmonkeyspresentedwithahistoryofmucohemorrhagicdiarrhea,markeddehydration,anddepression.Fifteenbacterialisolateswererecoveredfromthespleen,liver,andlungsofaffectedmonkeys.AllisolateswereidentifiedasY.enterocoliticabybiochemicalanalysisandsequencecomparisonofthe16SrRNAgene.Phenotypicandgenotypicanalysisoftherecoveredisolatesrevealedhomogeneityamongtherecoveredbacteria,andallisolatesgavearandomamplifiedpolymorphicDNApatternresemblingthatgivenbygenotypeDunderserotypesO:7,8.ThisoutbreakrepresentsthefirstisolationandcharacterizationofY.enterocoliticaasthecausativeagentoffatalentericdiseaseinprimatesintheCaribbean.
