Theanatomyoftheglenohumeraljointinhumansischaracterizedbystaticanddynamicstabilizingstructures.Inparticulartheglenoidlabrum(GL),theproximalattachmentofthejointcapsuleandthelateralglenohumeralligament,isanimportantpassivestabilizerinthehumanshoulder.Althoughcanineanimalmodelsareusedfrequentlytoinvestigatethecomplexbiomechanicsoftheshoulder,fewdataregardingthemicrostructureofthecanineGLareavailable.Inthisstudy,theanatomyofthecanineGLandrelatedstructures(n=20)wasinvestigatedandcomparedwiththehumananatomicsituation(n=36).Inbothhumanandbeaglejoints,theGLconsistedof3zones#8212;thetransitionzone,shiftingzone,andmeniscoidfold,butnotall3zoneswerepresentinalljointsegmentsfromcaninejoints.InparticulartheperipheralpartsoftheGLshowedrichvascularizationinbothspecies.TheheightandwidthoftheGLinthehistologicspecimensindicatedthattheGLisoflessimportanceasapassivestabilizerindogs.AdditionaldifferencesbetweenthehumanandcanineCLincludethejointligaments,tendonsoftheshoulderjoint,andlackofrotatorcuff.Thestructuralandbiomechanicalcharacteristicsofthejointsofquadrupedalanimalsraisethequestionoftheirappropriatenessforshoulderresearch.
