Partial History, Current Trends of Ecological Restoration in the Upper Midwest

In the 1930s, the Upper Midwest of the United States was home to a remarkable number of pioneers of ecology, nature conservation, landscape architecture, and ecological restoration, with some crossing boundaries among all four fields. The most famous visionary and catalyzer was Aldo Leopold, but there were many other people engaged. For example, in a section in Chapter | of Ecological Restoration in the Midwest—Past, Present, and Future, “Relationships between pioneers in landscape architecture and ecology,” we learn a great deal about Jens Jensen (pioneer conservation activist, native plants gardener, Chicago parks commissioner, and private landscape architect), and the better-known ecologist and con- servationist Henry Chandler Cowles. In Chapter 3, there is a thorough treatment of the Curtis Prairie, and Aldo Leopold’s multiple roles and insights.
