SELECTED LIST OF REFERENCES FOR A STUDY OF THE HISTORY OF BLOOD TRANSFUSION

T HIS LIST has been compiled in the hope that it may be useful to anyone making a study of the history of blood transfusion. Popular descriptions of the subject have not been considered. Emphasis has been laid on reports of experiments and of cases which have been significant in the development of blood transfusion as it is practiced at the present time. Since the belief in the advisability and necessity of using defibrinated blood constituted a blind alley in this development, I have included only two or three references to the men who advocated its used. I have mentioned them only because they are representative of a notion which was current through most of the nineteenth century, and important in this study only for that reason.
