Moringa oleifera Lam. (Moringaceae) is highly valued plant reported to have various biological activities. Considering the antioxidant properties of Moringa oleifera (MO), the chemopreventive property of hydro-ethanolic extract of drumsticks was evaluated on DMBA induced renal carcinogenicity. Groups of 10 male mice were pre- administered with MO (200 and 400mg/kg body weight) and standard (0.5%BHA) for 14 days prior to a single dose of DMBA (15mg/kg; p.o). The therapeutic efficacy of drumstick extract was observed in terms of normalization of altered renal oxidative stress parameters like LPO, SOD and CAT in kidney of mice. DMBA exposure elicited a significant escalation in LPO level and deplet ion in antioxidant enzymes namely superoxide dismutase and catalase. Investigated parameters were restored, nearly to the normal values, after MO extract treatment. These results suggested that MO extract could act against DMBA-induced kidney injury in mice by a mechanism related to its antioxidant properties.
