A smart insulin-delivery patch that monitors blood-sugar levels and automatically delivers the proper dosage of insulincould dramatically improve the quality of life for people with diabetes. Researchers at the University of California LosAngeles (UCLA), the University of North Carolina School of Medicine and Massachusetts Institute of Technology aredeveloping the technology, which they describe in a recent issue of Nature Biomedical Engineering. Having successfullytested the technology on animals, the research team, led by Zhen Gu, PhD, professor of bioengineering at the UCLA SamueliSchool of Engineering, has applied for FDA approval of clinical trials in humans.
