Transportation Security

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) plans to award more than $844 million in grants this year to help secure the nation's infrastructure as part of DHS grant programs for infrastructure protection activities. During times of rising fuel prices and on-going issues facing our economy based on the war in Iraq and significant challenges in both the housing and mortgage industries, my hat goes off to the Administration and Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff in obtaining this years, funding level. As Secretary Chertoff stated, "With this year's funding, the Department will have provided roughly $3 billion in grants for securing the nation's infrastructure and transportation systems." Clearly, in this writer's opinion, we have turned the corner in the race for homeland security funding for the Nation's infrastructure. However, with this milestone in place, the next question is, "Are we focusing on the right things?"
